How to use non-Proofgrade materials with Glowforge
A practical guide to choosing, preparing, testing, and safely working with materials outside the Glowforge Proofgrade system.
Known workflow vs. user-tested material
Proofgrade materials are sold by Glowforge so the machine can identify them and apply known settings. A non-Proofgrade material is anything else: wood from a lumber yard, acrylic from a supplier, cardboard, leather. It is not automatically worse. It simply means you take over identification and testing. Drag the divider to compare.
Select a material
Identification comes first: you need to know what the material is, how thick it is and what it is made of. Pick a material and the lab brings the sample to the centre. Wood, plywood, MDF, acrylic, cardboard and leather each behave differently.
The machine sees a material. You need to know what it is.
- THICKNESSMeasure it with calipers; labels are often rounded.
- COMPOSITIONSolid, layered, fibre or plastic? Glues and binders matter.
- COATINGFinishes, laminates and films can change how it burns.
- SURFACEGrain, gloss and flatness affect consistency.
- FLAMMABILITYPaper, cardboard and thin wood can flare. Never leave a job unattended.
- MANUFACTURERAsk the supplier for product and safety data.
Measure, don't assume
Thickness changes focus height, how much energy a material needs and whether a cut can go through. Nominal sizes are only a guide, so measure each sheet. This cross-section is a demonstration only.
Preparation station
A repeatable routine matters more than any single trick. Scroll to move the sample through the station.
CLEAN
Remove dust and residue.MEASURE
Check thickness and flatness.POSITION
Lay it flat and secure it.MASK / PROTECT
Only if appropriate for the material.TEST
Never skip this one.One sheet, five different outcomes
A test piece is a small run of the same artwork at different energy levels on an offcut of your actual material. Scroll to run the scan across the zones and compare. Choose the result you like, then record it.
Explore the idea, not a recipe
Not every material belongs in a laser.
Before processing anything, confirm the material is suitable and read the manufacturer's information. Do not process unknown plastics, vinyl or PVC, or anything you cannot identify. Some materials release harmful fumes or ignite. Follow Glowforge's official materials guidance and keep ventilation working.
