Before Troubleshooting
- Never look directly into the laser beam.
- Use appropriate laser safety equipment and enclosure practices.
- Never bypass safety features.
- Keep appropriate fire safety equipment available.
- Never leave a laser operating unattended unless the manufacturer explicitly permits the setup.
- Stop immediately if flames become uncontrolled, or if the machine behaves unexpectedly.
- Power down appropriately before physical inspection or maintenance.
- Do not modify wiring, electronics, firmware, or safety systems unless supported by the manufacturer.
The exact procedure can vary by ATOMSTACK model. Check the documentation for your specific machine before changing firmware, controller settings, wiring, or hardware.
Start Here: 60-Second ATOMSTACK Diagnosis
Is the machine detected by your computer?

Does it cut but produce smoke or poor airflow?
YES → Air Assist, ventilation, exhaust path, fan, enclosure airflow.
ATOMSTACK Not Connecting to LightBurn or LaserGRBL
What it looks like: the ATOMSTACK connection problem shows as no COM port, "not detected", or software that never reaches the controller. Connection depends on USB communication, computer detection, the COM port (the virtual serial channel your computer assigns to the controller), drivers where required, controller communication, and firmware compatibility. The exact procedure can vary by ATOMSTACK model; check your machine's documentation before changing firmware or controller settings.
ATOMSTACK Not Connecting to LightBurn
- Check the USB cable. Use a data-capable cable; charge-only or worn cables drop communication. Next: swap in a known-good compatible cable.
- Try another USB port. A direct port, not a hub, isolates port faults. Next: retest.
- Confirm machine power. The controller must be powered for the computer to see it. Next: check the supply and switch.
- Check LightBurn device configuration. The right device/machine profile depends on your exact model and controller. Next: confirm it against the documentation.
- Check the COM port. Unplug and replug the machine and note which port appears or disappears in your system's device list; that is the controller. Next: select it in LightBurn.
- Restart LightBurn. Clears a stale or locked port.
- Restart computer and machine. Power the machine down, restart the PC, then reconnect.
- Check driver requirements. Some controllers need a driver and some do not. Check what your model requires.
- Check controller/firmware compatibility. Confirm the software supports your controller. Do not flash firmware unless the manufacturer supports it for your model.
- Run a simple test. Try a safe movement or a tiny low-risk job to confirm two-way communication.
ATOMSTACK Not Connecting to LaserGRBL
- USB cable. Same data-cable check; stability matters more than length.
- USB port. Try a different direct port.
- Machine power. Confirm the controller is on before opening the software.
- Correct COM port. Use the unplug/replug method to find the right one; selecting the wrong port is the most common cause.
- Communication settings. Parameters can vary by controller and model. Use the values in your machine's documentation, not values from another model.
- Restart LaserGRBL. Close fully, then reopen after reconnecting.
- Restart computer. Releases ports held by other programs.
- Driver requirements. Check whether your controller needs one and whether your OS lists the device.
- Firmware / controller information. Confirm your controller is compatible with LaserGRBL before changing anything.
- Simple test. Confirm a basic movement command before any job.
| Symptom | Possible Area | First Check |
|---|---|---|
| ATOMSTACK not detected | USB / driver | Cable + computer detection |
| LightBurn not connecting | Device setup | Configuration + COM port |
| LaserGRBL not connecting | Communication | COM port + settings |
| Machine connects then stops | USB / software | Cable + stability |
| Connection works sometimes | Cable / port | Known-good compatible cable |
| Machine stops during jobs | Communication | Cable + sleep + controller |
If the Problem Continues
Collect: exact ATOMSTACK model, software name and version, operating system, what happens when connecting, any error message, whether the computer detects the machine, whether it happens every time, and which steps you already tried. Then contact official support.
ATOMSTACK Keeps Disconnecting During a Job
"Never connects" is a setup problem. "Connects, then loses communication" is usually stability: an unstable or damaged USB cable, cable movement, an unreliable port, computer sleep or power management, software communication, controller or firmware behavior, or other system interruptions.
- Check the cable. Inspect for damage and loose connectors.
- Avoid cable movement. Route it so gantry motion never tugs it.
- Try another USB port. Prefer a direct port.
- Prevent sleep during jobs. Sleep and USB power saving can interrupt communication.
- Close unnecessary applications. Reduce competing load.
- Restart software and machine. Start from a clean state.
- Run a short job. Find out whether it fails quickly or only on long jobs.
- Test another compatible data cable. Change only the cable.
- Check controller/firmware documentation. Look for known behavior for your model.
- Stop repeated long jobs until resolved. A drop mid-job can leave the laser in an unexpected state or ruin material, so do not ignore repeats.
If the Problem Continues
Note your model, software and version, OS, when the drop happens (time into job, after movement, after sleep), any error message, and what you tested. Share this with official support.
ATOMSTACK Laser Not Firing
Causes include no power, software output disabled, wrong layer settings, wrong device configuration, communication problems, protection behavior, a laser module connection issue, hardware failure, or overheating protection.
- Confirm machine power. Check the supply and indicators described in your manual.
- Confirm software connection. The software should report a connected, idle machine.
- Check output settings. Make sure laser output is enabled in the software.
- Check layer settings. Layer output must be on, with nonzero output for that layer.
- Check machine configuration. A wrong profile can stop output. Verify for your model.
- Inspect visible connections safely. With power off, look for loose connectors. Do not rewire.
- Check for protection/overheating. Let the machine cool and check manual guidance.
- Test a simple job. Use a small, safe test on scrap material.
- Compare movement vs. output. Moving but not firing points to output settings or module; not moving points to connection.
- Stop if hardware failure is suspected. Burning smells, flicker, or damage mean power down and contact support.
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Moves but laser doesn't fire | Output/configuration | Layer/output settings |
| No machine communication | Connection | USB/COM/software |
| Fires intermittently | Protection/connection | Stability |
| Laser appears weak | Focus/optics/output | Focus + lens + settings |
| Stopped during job | Controller/protection | Machine status |
If the Problem Continues
Record model, software and version, OS, whether the machine is detected, any error message, whether it happens every time, and steps already tried.
ATOMSTACK Not Cutting Through
Cutting depends on laser power, speed, focus, material, thickness, density, lens condition, Air Assist, passes, flatness, and software output. Settings depend on model and material, so use tests, not borrowed numbers.
- Identify the material. Woods, acrylics, and boards absorb laser energy very differently, and some are unsuitable for laser use.
- Check thickness. Thicker material needs more energy delivered.
- Check focus. The focal point is where the beam is smallest and most concentrated; off-focus spreads energy.
- Check speed. Slower movement delivers more energy per distance; faster delivers less.
- Check output/power. Appropriate values depend on model and material.
- Test multiple passes. Passes can help, but add heat exposure and charring risk. Watch the job.
- Check Air Assist. Airflow clears debris and smoke from the cut.
- Inspect the lens. Contamination reduces delivered energy.
- Check flatness. Warped material changes focus across the sheet.
- Build a small test grid. See the section below.
If the Problem Continues
Collect model, software and version, OS, material and thickness, what happens, and steps tried, so support can respond effectively.
Stop Guessing: Build an ATOMSTACK Material Test
Make a small matrix varying SPEED across columns and POWER/OUTPUT down rows; use PASSES as a third variable in a second run. This grid is illustrative, with no real values.
- Choose a small test area.
- Keep material consistent.
- Change one variable systematically.
- Record the result.
- Find the smallest reliable setting combination.
- Save it for future jobs.
Results vary by ATOMSTACK model, laser power, material, thickness, focus, optics, Air Assist, and environment.
ATOMSTACK Engraving Too Light
Light engraving usually comes from speed too high, output too low, incorrect focus, a dirty lens, poor image preparation, low contrast, dithering choice, material surface, engraving mode, Air Assist, or module condition.
- Check focus. Defocus is the most common cause of weak, fuzzy engraving.
- Check speed. Faster passes mark less.
- Check output. Adjust gradually in tests.
- Check material. Some surfaces, finishes, or coatings resist marking.
- Check image contrast. Low-contrast images produce pale results.
- Check image resolution. Low-resolution files engrave poorly.
- Check dithering / image mode. Mode affects tone and depth.
- Check engraving mode. Line vs. fill/image modes behave differently.
- Inspect the lens. Contamination weakens output.
- Run a small test pattern. Test before the full job.
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Engraving very light | Speed/output | Settings |
| Uneven engraving | Focus/material | Flatness + focus |
| Low contrast | Image preparation | Contrast/dithering |
| One area darker | Focus/material | Surface |
| Output weakened over time | Lens/module | Optics |
| Excess smoke | Airflow | Air Assist/ventilation |
If the Problem Continues
Collect model, software and version, OS, material, image file type, and steps tried.
ATOMSTACK Air Assist Not Working
Causes: pump not powered, disconnected or kinked hose, blocked nozzle, damaged tubing, pump issue, or a model-specific Air Assist configuration. Air Assist can reduce smoke near the cut, clear debris, support cleaner cuts, and reduce flare-ups in appropriate setups, but it will not fix every cutting problem.
- Check power. Confirm the pump is powered as your manual describes.
- Check hose connections. Look for loose fittings.
- Check for kinks. Straighten and reroute tubing.
- Check airflow. Feel for airflow at the nozzle with the laser off.
- Inspect the nozzle. Clear residue only with the machine off.
- Check the pump. Listen for normal operation.
- Check the air path. Follow it end to end for leaks or blockages.
- Check model-specific configuration. Setup varies by model; confirm in your documentation.
- Test before a full job. Verify airflow first.
- Stop if the pump or electrical system looks damaged. Power down and contact support.
If the Problem Continues
Record model, Air Assist kit or setup, what you hear or feel, and steps tried.
ATOMSTACK Smoke, Fan & Ventilation Problems
Air Assist and exhaust are different systems. Air Assist blows air at the cut point; exhaust removes smoke and fumes from the work area. Causes include a poor exhaust path, blocked duct, weak fan, enclosure leaks, fan obstruction, excessive smoke, poor airflow direction, dirty components, or fan bearing noise.
- Identify where smoke is going. Observe it during a short test.
- Check the exhaust path. Look for bends, restrictions, or leaks.
- Check for blockages. With power off, inspect ducts and filters.
- Check fan operation. Confirm the fan runs and moves air.
- Check airflow direction. Air should carry smoke toward the exhaust.
- Check enclosure sealing. Gaps let smoke escape.
- Check Air Assist separately. Isolate it from exhaust.
- Inspect for abnormal fan noise. Grinding or rattling may indicate obstruction or wear.
- Stop if the fan is hot, smells burnt, or behaves abnormally. Power down and contact support.
- Improve ventilation before long jobs. Test a short run first.
Safety: never vent hazardous fumes into occupied indoor spaces, and never assume a material is safe to laser.
If the Problem Continues
Collect model, exhaust setup, material, what you observe, and steps tried.
Before Changing Power: Check Focus & Lens
People often raise power when the real problem is incorrect focus, a dirty lens, material position, poor alignment, or unsuitable material.
FOCUS CHECK
Confirm the correct focal distance for your model, keep material flat, and keep surface height consistent.
LENS CHECK
Inspect for contamination. Use manufacturer-approved cleaning procedures only, after the machine has cooled and been powered down.

ATOMSTACK Troubleshooting FAQ
Check the data-capable USB cable, a different USB port, machine power, the device configuration for your exact model, and the selected COM port. Restart the software and computer, then check driver and firmware compatibility in your documentation.
The usual causes are the wrong COM port, communication settings that do not match your controller, a poor cable, or a missing driver. Use the values from your machine's documentation rather than another model's.
Try a known-good data cable and a direct USB port, confirm the machine is powered, and check whether a driver is required for your model. If nothing appears when you plug in, contact official support.
Check cable condition and movement, try another port, prevent computer sleep, close other applications, and test a short job. Avoid running long jobs until the drops are resolved.
Check power, software connection, output and layer settings, machine configuration, and protection or overheating behavior. If it moves but never fires, suspect output settings first. If hardware failure is suspected, stop and contact support.
Check focus, material and thickness, speed, output, passes, lens condition, flatness, and Air Assist. Run a small test grid rather than copying settings from another machine.
Common causes are incorrect focus, speed too high, output too low, a dirty lens, low image contrast, or a material that resists marking. Test one variable at a time.
Yes, contamination can reduce the energy reaching the material. Clean only using manufacturer-approved procedures, after the machine has cooled and been powered down.
Yes. Off-focus beams spread their energy, so cuts and engravings weaken. Keep material flat and surface height consistent.
Check pump power, hose connections, kinks, nozzle blockages, and the air path. Setup varies by model, so confirm it in your documentation. Stop if the pump or wiring looks damaged.
Look for a blocked or restrictive exhaust path, a weak fan, enclosure leaks, or poor airflow direction. Air Assist is separate from exhaust. Never vent hazardous fumes into occupied indoor spaces.
Power down and inspect for obstructions. If the fan is hot, smells burnt, or still sounds abnormal, stop using the machine and contact official support.
